BROKER’S COMMENTS:  This is definitely one of the premier ranches in the Texas Hill Country.  It has it all: location, live water, grasses, tree coverage, wildlife, home to entertain and live the good life.

History of the river and the land:  This country estate is full of history and charm.  The following description of the country surrounding the South San Gabriel (then known as the San Xavier River) was described by French explorer Athanase de Mezieres in 1779.  “Few rivers can compare with the San Xavier in the clearness of its waters or in abundance of fish.  The surrounding country could be irrigates…mills could be erected.  The number of wild horses and cattle…is incredible.  Buffalo is not lacking…goats and sheep would thrive…  In the wood will be found…lumber, and in the quarries, all kins of stone for building.”

Fray Isidio Felix de Espinosa and Domingo Ramon gave the river the name of San Francisco Xavier when they were on a trip in the area around 1716.  In 1828 Stephen F. Austin misspelled the name of the river as “San Javriel.”  Soon after, the corruption of the name was complete and the river’s name was established as the San Gabriel.

Along the banks of the San Gabriel, the Tonkawa Indians continued their nomadic ways, camping and hunting wherever the river provided them with their food and water.  In the 1800’s, settlers started moving into what became known as Williamson County, Texas to farm and ranch.  This part of the San Gabriel is part of the enormous Brazos River Watershed that begins in Eastern New Mexico and falls through 840 miles to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Home:  The property is entered through a stone entrance housing wrought iron gates.  Traveling down a winding tree-shaded lane, the visitor approaches an unexpectedly luxurious home and terraces.  The visitor can enjoy observing the wildlife and ranch animals from the 12 foot covered front porch that overlooks several pastures and hillside.

The hostess of this lovely home may choose to entertain inside, taking advantage of well-balanced lighting from large glass double front doors and all of the windows that provide God’s light to flow throughout the home.  Or, she may choose the shady terrace in the back, just off the large country kitchen with built-in Bar-B-Que pit, and the spacious terrace overlooking the stable and horse arena.

A few of the attractive features that grace this beautifully appointed home include massive wooden and glass doors in the front, d’Hanis tile throughout the ground floor, and standing seem metal roof.  As a guest, you will be struck by the care and attention to detail and planning that have gone into creating this home.

The main house includes the Master Suite and a second bedroom, both located on the western side of the home, then two more bedrooms and a bunk room for the children and two more baths.  Privacy is insured by separating the two areas with a sitting area with large firewood burning fireplace, dining area and entry area.
